Simms, Day Capture High School Championship while Gonzaga Takes Team Title
St. John, NL…The 2018 High School Golf Championships took place on the Admiral’s Green Course at Pippy Park on Friday September 7th with a total of thirty-three (33) players, competing in an (18) hole, stroke play format. The event included an individual and team competitions attracted students representing six (6) schools from three (3) regions of the province.
Michael Simms of Gonzaga captured the individual Boys Championship recording a 5 over par 75 to win by three stroke over Gavin Connors representing Holy Trinity High in Torbay. Nathan Young of Gonzaga carded an 84 to claim third place. In the Girls Division, Rachel Day of Marystown High school won the championship recording a score of 107 with Katherine Dibbon of Waterford Valley High placing second.
In the team competition. Gonzaga High comprised of team members Michael Simms, Nathan Young, Murry Byrne and Jeff King captured the boys title with a combined total score of 252 and a 7 stroke win over second place Holy Trinity High. Holy Heart of Mary Regional High School placed third with a total of 276.
Tournament Convener, Gregory Winters of Holy Heart of Mary High School thanked the management and staff of Pippy Park Golf Course for hosting the competition, officials including Jim Sloan and Len Woodford and acknowledged the partnership with Golf Newfoundland Labrador to continue with the event in 2019.
