Stagg and Cormier Lead Amateur at 2021 Royal LePage Provincial Championships

Port Blandford, NL—While the day started out with clear skies and a calm wind, conditions changed considerably mid afternoon with the onset of heavy rain and thunder that hauled play for approximately 45 minutes. When play resumed the weather conditions turned cold with intermittent showers to complete the first round of the 2021 Royal LePage Provincial Amateur Championships on Twin Rivers Course at Terra Nova Resort

The exceptional early morning scoring conditions provided some close competition as Jason Stagg of Humber Valley Resort and Robbie Squires of Bally Haly Country Club carding a 2 over par 73 to record the low round of the day and a tie for first in both the Men’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Divisions.

In the Amateur Division, five players including Matt Bonnell, Ryan Aucoin, Ryan Howlell, Jonathan Organ and Jaron Flynn are tied for third, just 1 stroke off the pace. A similar situation exists in the Mid-Amateur with Organ and Flynn just 1 stroke behind the leaders.

2019 Senior Champion Chuck Conley of Baly Haly leads the Senior Division, recording a 5 over par 76 and a 1 stroke lead over Eddie Bearns of Bally Haly and Alan Masters of Humber Valley Resort who are T2 with a round of 77. In the Super Senior Division, Alan Masters has taken a commanding 10 stroke lead over Tony Flood of Glendenning Golf who carded an 87 with George Chaulk rounding out the top three carding an 88.

Taylor Cormier of Blomidon Golf Club and Janet Mills of Bally Haly recorded the lowest round of the day in the ladies divisions with a score of 86. Cormier leads the Amateur Division by 7 strokes over 2019 Amateur Champion Kathleen Jean of Harmon Seaside Links and 8 strokes ahead of third place Gale Roberts of Bally Haly.

Mills leads the Ladies Mid-Amateur Division by 4 strokes over Deborah Delaney of Glendenning Golf who carded a 90 while Kathleen Jean holds down third place with a one day total of 93. In the Senior Division , Mills has a 4 stroke lead over Bobbie Boland of Bally Haly and Delaney with identical scores of 90. Kathleen Jean and Sherilyn Beaton are T4 with a score of 93.
