Golf Newfoundland Labrador & the Hall Of Fame Committee is pleased to accept Barry Stacey into the Golf Hall of Fame, Class of 2023

Barry Stacey was born the fifth of eleven children to Alfred and Priscilla Stacey of Lamaline, Newfoundland. Barry grew up knowing the value of hard work and commitment to community. In 1968, during the resettlement era, Barry’s family moved to Marystown where Barry completed his high school education. After graduating from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Barry taught in Rushoon and Marystown for thirty years.

Barry has made invaluable contributions to sports in the town of Marystown and was named Softball Executive of the Year in Marystown in 1982. Also, he was named Softball NL Male Executive of the Year in 1986. Barry was a founding member of Grande Meadows Golf Course in 1995. Since then, he has been – and continues to be – an invaluable volunteer at the course. Barry, along with Dave Brenton, started the Grande Meadows Tournament Committee and was an integral member of that committee for fifteen years or so. When the committee disbanded. Barry continued working with Kim Grandy organizing and running tournaments until the tournament committee was restarted a few years ago by Clayton Welsh.

Barry was instrumental in starting the first Grande Meadows Invitational Tournament in 1998. This continues to be held annually. He also started the annual Burin Peninsula Open Tournament in 2008. For both these tournaments Barry took care of registration, prizes, tee times, handicaps and all stats. He continues to do this for both of these tournaments annually right up to the present day.

Barry has served on the Board of Directors at Grande Meadows for a total of seven years – 1994, 1995, 2010, and 2018 to 2021. For the past couple of years, he served as Finance Director and gave hundreds of hours of his time and energy in this capacity. For the past five years he has been a member of the Men’s Night Committee – helping with registration and posting results on the website. Barry’s involvement doesn’t stop there. He has attended a number of meetings of Golf Newfoundland on behalf of Grande Meadows. And over the years he has helped with many applications for various job projects. These projects have contributed greatly to the betterment of Grande Meadows.

For the past twenty years, Barry has maintained the Grande Meadows website. He keeps members up to date on all the happenings at the course. He has posted statistics for all tournaments and competitions for those twenty years. Also, he made sure that the Telegram was given the stats and that these stats also made it to the local radio station (CHCM) as well as the local paper (The Southern Gazette).

Barry has been and continues to be an invaluable member and volunteer and he is always the consummate gentleman. He is in no small way responsible for the development of golf at Grande Meadows Golf Course in Frenchman’s Cove, Newfoundland and as such is very deserving of a place in the Golf Hall of Fame.
