A total of 125 golfers from across the province, including 108 men and 17 women, have converged on Bally Haly Country Club in St. John’s to compete in the 2022 Royal LePage Provincial Amateur Championships from July 10th to 13th for the right to represent the province at the National Championships.
Despite steady winds and firm greens, day 1 of the Championships provided some excitement as Mike Furlong carded a 5 under par 67 to record the low score of the day and placed atop the leaderboard in the Mens’ Amateur and Mid-Amateur Divisions. Ryan MacNeil Lamswood of Harmon Seaside Links carded an impressive 68, putting himself in second place, while Jaron Flynn and Grant Lane recorded a score of 72 for an even par—and tied for third place heading into day 2 of the competition.
In the Womens’ Divisions, Ladies’ Amateur Champion and Blomidon Golf Club member Taylor Cormier tied with Bally Haly member Janet Mills atop the Amateur Division with an identical score of 84. Allison Crawford, also of Bally Haly, carded an 85 to round out the top three in the Division. Mills holds the lead in the Mid-Amateur Division by 1 stroke over Crawford, with 2022 provincial Mid-Amateur and Senior Champion Kathleen Jean of Harmon Seaside Links and Donna Manning of Glendenning Golf tying for third with a score of 86.
Mills leads the Senior Division with a 2-stroke lead over Kathleen Jean and Donna Manning. Mills also leads the Super Senior Division, a 36-hole competition with the winner declared at the conclusion of round 2. Mills led by 6 strokes over club mates Linda Webber and Deborah Stanford, who carded a 90.
In the highly contested Men’s Mid-Amateur Division, Furlong led the field of 67 players with a 5-stroke lead over Jaron Flynn. C.J. Nolan and Keith Dawe tied for third with a score of 73 and standing 6 stroke off the pace.
In the Senior Men’s Division, Gary Walsh of Bally Haly recorded a 3 over par 75 to hold a 1-stroke lead over club mate Colin Budgell. Don Boland and Eddie Bearns, both of Bally Haly, held down third place with a score of 78. Andrew Budgell led by 2 strokes over Don Boland with George Chaulk of Harmon Seaside|Links holding down third place with a one-day total of 82 in the 36-hole competition to decide the Mens’ Super Senior Division Champion for 2022.
Round 2 is happening on Tuesday morning, beginning at 7:30 A.M.
