DAY 1 – ROYAL LEPAGE JUNIOR PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – GANDER GOLF CLUB

Day one of The 2023 Royal LePage Junior Provincial Championships kicked off at 9 am Monday, July 3rd at the beautiful Gander Golf Club. Under cloudy skies, a few showers began as the second group left the tee box. Hoping that conditions will hold up throughout today’s play.

Twenty-two players from across the island make up the field at this year’s competition ranging in age from 12 -18yrs. Over the next three days, junior golfers will be playing in three age divisions, Bantam, Juvenile, and Junior with all competitors eligible to win the overall championship.

So, the game was on as the competitors headed into the back nine with wind speeds picking up and a threat of rain in the air. The play was almost suspended as a heavy shower came down over the lunch hour but fortunately, it quickly passed and play went uninterrupted.

Leading the pack in the Girls’ division following today’s round was Sanjana Gullipalli of Bally Haly Country Club with a score of 9 over par 79 and a 1-stroke lead over 2022 defending Junior Campion Mila Snook, also of Baly Hally Country Club. Rounding out the top three from Blomindo Golf Club Paige Allen with a score of 87.

In the Boys’ division, Daniel Sharpe of Blomidon Golf Clun carded a 5 over par 75 to lead the field of 16 competitors after the initial day of competition. Lucan Meade of Bally Haly Country and representing NL at the 2023 North American Aboriginal Gamnes this summer is 5 strokes behind the lead with Declan Flynn of Glendenning Golf scoring an 81, good for third place.

Play will resume Tuesday, July 4th beginning at 9:00 A.M. NST. For more information visit www.golfnl.ca.
