18 Holes 18 Questions: Janine Fraser

18 Holes! 18 QUESTIONS!

Name:  Janine Fraser

Terra Nova Golf Resort

Bio: Janine has been an avid golfer for 25+ years. It all began spending a summer in Corner Brook in her early 20’s with a “friend” who just happened to be a golf instructor and she was hooked !!! Janine and husband Doug became members at The Woods where Janine joined the ladies league. She realized that golf was not just a great sport but a wonderful way to meet and spend time with friends. Janine continued to be a member as the Woods eventually became Glendenning and then a birthday ski weekend for her son Thomas changed it all. Janine and family rented a chalet at the Terra Nova Golf resort and fell in love with the property. They were available for purchase and the Frasers soon became Chalet owners. This prompted another membership at the beautiful Terra Nova Golf Resort. In 2016 Janine’s love of the sport prompted her to get involved with Golf NL in fundraising and another passion was ignited to help promote the game as well as the development of the sport in this province. Janine went on to become Vice President and eventually President of Golf NL and in the summer of 2023 Events Coordinator. Her passion for the game continues and Janine spends as many weekends as possible enjoying the sport she loves at her home course in Terra Nova.

  5. What’s your favorite course that you have played what course would you like to play anywhere in the world?
Terra Nova is my favorite course!!! I still do not take the amazing views for granted. I would love an opportunity to see and play St.Andrew’s old course but with those bunkers it might play me!!
  6. Where and when did you start golfing?
Blomidon Golf Course in Corner Brook in my early 20’s.
  7. Can you (briefly) tell us your most memorable golf experience.
There have been many, but always great memories playing Premiers Cup at Glendenning in the style of Presidents Cup. Great group of friends and a really great time!!
  8. Can you (briefly) tell us your funniest golf experience.
My funniest would have to be at The Grand Falls Mixed Invitational. I was on the green putting and as I made my putt the group we were golfing with all started to burst out laughing at me and I thought “I know I missed my putt but it wasn’t that bad!” When I turned around my husband Doug who had been sizing up my putt had fallen backwards into the bunker!!
  9. What is your greatest golf accomplishment?
For me it was the first time I broke 100 at Terra Nova . It’s a tough course and that meant a lot.
  10. How do you like to relax?
I always call golf my “therapy“ so relaxing for me it’s having a great game on a sunny day.
  11. What is your most treasured golf possession?
My most treasured golf possession is a pin flag from the CP Women’s Open I attended at the Ottawa Hunt Golf Club. I was invited there by Golf Canada representing Golf NL as President and member of Provincial Council. The flag was given to me by the President of Golf Canada. It was signed by Lori Kane who I watched play the last round of her 30 year professional career on the LPGA.
  12. What is your best/worst quality on the golf course?
Best quality would be my driving and long fairway shots …still need more work around that green!!
  13. What 3 professional golfers would you like to join you at a dream dinner party?
That’s tough as I love so many golfers but if I had to pin it down to three would be Tiger Woods, Phil Mickleson and Annika Sorenstam.
  14. Have you ever had a hole-in-one? When and where?
No hole in one yet ..been 3 inches away from one though.
  15. What is your best score ever and on what course?
Best ever was a 91 at Terra Nova …who knows maybe this will be the year I break 90 for the first time!!!
  16. What is your favorite/least favorite golfing hole on a Newfoundland & Labrador golf course?
Favorite golfing hole would be hole 18 at Terra Nova ..the view from the top deck is unreal! Worst hole would be 18 at Glendenning because that bog has magnets I’m convinced and another would be #5 at Terra Nova ..toughest on the course and lots of trouble to get into!!!.
  17. What do you think is the worst rule in golf and how would you change it?
Worst rule in golf ..so myself and Doug discussed it and decided that having to hit your ball out of a divot is one of the worst rules of golf .Our answer is that you should be able to place your ball one club head distance from the divot no closer to the hole.
  18. What advice would you give to a young golfer starting to play golf today?
My advice would be take lessons and make sure you go to the driving range to practice and warmup before you play .Most importantly is don’t be too hard on yourself when you make bad shots. It’s a humbling game!!! Too bad I don’t listen to my own advice!!! But most important is have fun with the people you golf with!!!.
