Biography: Born July 6, 1938, Rayner Lamb has had an extensive golf career in Newfoundland achieving a number of successes and accomplishments along the way. Having been a member of both the Bally Haly Golf and Curling Club and the Blomidon Golf Club, he has won a number of local titles. Mr. Lamb is a two-time winner of the Medal play Championship and a five-time winner of the Match play Championship at Bally Haly. At this club, he was also the four-time winner of the Men’s Opening Tournament, the winner of the Tournament of Champions and the winner of the Stenaford Mixed Championship with his wife, to name a few. He won the Blomidon Medal play club Championship and holds a number of records for this course. Provincially, Mr. Lamb won the Amateur Championship in 1966, the Labour Day Inaugural Tournament in 1980, the Mid-Amateur Tournament in 1988 and the Senior Championship in 1994. He has also represented Newfoundland nationally on a number of occasions as a member of the Willingdon Cup team (1966, 1971, 1978 and 1997), and as a four-time member of the Newfoundland Senior Golf team in 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1997.

  1. What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I am still playing golf at the age of 85 and have shot my age or better 225 times.

  1. Are you a member of a golf club and what club?

I am a member of Bally Haly and have been since 1966 (48 years).

  1. Who do you regularly play golf with?

Miller Ayre, Tom Foran, Keith Rose, (Dave Dyer).

  1. What’s the favorite course you have ever played?

Royal Montreal (blue course).

  1. What course would you like to play anywhere in the world?

St. Andrew’s Scotland

  1. Where and when did you start golfing?

I started golf at Royal Montreal as a caddie at 7 years of age. We played in the caddie yard as well as the annual caddie tournament.

  1. Can you (briefly) tell us your most memorable golf experience.

Representing the Province in the National team championships (the Wellington Cup) 4 times and representing the Province on 5 senior teams.

  1. Can you (briefly) tell us your funniest golf experience.

Many years ago, we experienced a sea gull on our 10th hole that picked up 4 of our balls and swallowed them. When he tried to fly he couldn’t get off the ground.

  1. What is your greatest golf accomplishment?

I have won 8 club championships; 3 medal play and 5 match play as well as 15 other club tournaments.

  1. How do you like to relax?

I play golf.

  1. What is your best quality on the golf course?

Chipping

  1. What is your worst quality on the golf course?

The shanks

  1. What 3 professional golfers would you like to join you at a dream dinner party?

Old Tom Morris, Ben Hogan, Tiger Woods.

  1. Have you ever had a Hole-in-one?

I have had only 1 hole-in-one on Bally Haly’s old 5th hole.
