Leslie ‘Les’ Skanes (1925-1990), born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, was active in the golf community in this province during much of his lifetime. As an athlete, he competed nationally on the Newfoundland Senior team for 8 out of 9 consecutive seasons. He was a member of this team from 1981 to 1989, with the only exception being 1986. During these competitions, he often stood out from the pack, leading his team on the scoreboard in 1982, 1983, and 1984. Most notably, he achieved success in 1982, 1983, and 1985 as the Newfoundland Senior Golf Champion. Mr. Skanes participated in a number of local tournaments at his affiliated club, Bally Haly, of which he was a member for 33 years.
