Chuck Conley

Athlete, 2014
Bally Haly Country Club

Born in 1961, Chuck Conley started playing golf in 1976 at age 15, at Riverside Golf Club in St John, New Brunswick. However at that young age, he didn’t realize the opportunities that were available from golf, and even after breaking “80” in his first year, he gave it up after just one season.

He was transferred to Goose Bay, Labrador with the Royal Bank; It was there in summer of 1989, that he began to play golf again. After leaving the Bank he started various businesses in Goose Bay, and is the owner of a Real Estate Holding company. He has one son Ryan, age 14.

In 1991 at the age of 30, Mr. Conley played in his first Provincial competition. By1994, he was the alternate on the provincial Amateur team and in 1995, after a final round 70 (a competitive course record at the time), he was tied for the Provincial Amateur title with Derek Webster. He lost the sudden death playoff, however it was the first of 15 provincial teams and he was hooked on the competition and camaraderie of the sport!

Over the years he has been an active member of the golf community, serving in various executive positions for the Amaruk Golf Club, as well as assisting with the junior programs. Additionally, he served as the Northern representative for the NLGA for 5 years and served on the NLGA executive in 2002.

In the fall of 2003 he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and with the surgery was told he would never play competitive golf again. After radiation and 6 months of physiotherapy he began to gain strength and begin to swing again. Given his Doctors prognosis, he was even more determined to play again. By the end of the summer he won the Labrador Cup with a final round 67 (-4) to set a new competitive course record at Amaruk Golf Club.

Two years later, in 2006 he won the Provincial Amateur and Mid Amateur, the first time that both titles were won by the same person in the same year. He has made consecutive Provincial Mid Amateur teams from 2002 through 2010, only missing 2004 (by 2 strokes) the year he was recovering from cancer.

Mr. Conley has won 5 Provincial Championships. In 2002 he won his first Provincial Mid Amateur title by

2 shots (71-73-72), and won again in 2006, and 2010. He was Provincial Amateur Champion in 2006 and Provincial Mid Master Champion in 2013. Mr. Conley has been on 5 Amateur teams and 10 Mid Amateur teams.

A Member of the Amaruk Golf Club in Goose Bay, Labrador from 1989-2010, and he has been a member of Bally Haly Golf Club since 2011. Mr. Conley is an avid player and remains very competitive in the province. He is very proud and honored to have represented Newfoundland and Labrador on a national basis and humbled to be recognized for his achievements by the NL Hall of Fame.
