2016 Amateur Championships

Jean Wins Triple-Crown, Conley A Double Winner and Bursey Retains Amateur Title at 2016 Royal LePage Amateur Provincial Championships

Port Blandford, NL....The weather conditions at the 2016 Royal LePage Provincial Amateur Championships at Terra Nova Resort proved to be the underlying story as players were faced with extreme cold and windy conditions to start the final round of the competition. Despite the conditions, Kathleen Jean of Harmon Seaside Links captured the Women's Amateur, Mid-Amateur and Senior Championships.

2015 Amateur Champion Blair Bursey maintained his consistent play and carded a final round 74 to record a three day total of 221 to retain his title and captured his second title by 11 strokes over Chuck Conley of Bally Haly Country Club and Nathan Peters of Clovelly who tied for second with a three day total of 232 and 1 stroke ahead of fourth place Bard Slaney from Bally Haly Country Club.

In the Womens Amateur Division Kathleen Jean of Harmon Seaside Links recorded an 86 for a three day total of 265 completing a come from behind victory by 5 strokes over 2015 champion Judy Gillam of Humber Valley Resort. 2014 champion Janet Mills of Bally Haly recorded a final round 87 to take sole position of third place with a three day total of 276.

In the Men's Mid Amateur Division Chuck Conley recorded a final round 77 to secure the Mid-Amateur title by 1 stroke over fellow club member Brad Slaney who carded a final round 74 to move into second place, just 3 strokes ahead of Mahboob Nawaz of Glendenning Golf who recorded a three day total of 236 to round out the top three finishers in the field of 45 players.

In the Senior Men's Division, Chuck Conley overcame a 2 stroke deficit heading into the final day of competition to record a three day total of 232 and capture his second title by 1 stroke over Don Boland of Bally Haly Country Club who carded an 87 to drop into second place. George Chaulk of Harmon Seaside Links secured his third place finish with a three day total of 245 to round out the top three players in the division.

Don Boland lead the Super Senior Division wire to wire and finished the competition ahead of 2012 super senior champion Ray Stoodley of Bally Haly Country Club. Thomas Jones of Gander Golf Club carded an 86 to finish in third place just 1 stroke behind Stoodley.

In the Women's Mid-Amateur and Senior Divisions Jean took the titles with Judy Gillam and Janet Mills finishing second and third respectively. In the Super Senior Division Judy Gillam retained her title with a three day total of 270 while Rosie Boland finished second carding a final round 101 for a three day total of 285. Linda Webber of Bally Haly Country Club finished in third place with a three day total of 309.

During the awards ceremonies Rex Anthony of Terra Nova Resort & Golf Community was presented with a small token of appreciation for hosting the champions and local Tournament Chairperson Larry Reid was acknowledged for coordinating the volunteers to assist with pace of play, forecaddies, scoring and starting. The President of GNL, Steve Wedgwood made acknowledged the support and contribution of title sponsor Royal lePage and thanked the other sponsors including Browning Harvey, Munn Insurtance, Collingwood spirits & Wines (Iceberg), labatt and Old Dutch for the contribution to the success of the 2016 Royal LePage Provincial Junior and Amateur Championships.

At the conclusion of the awards program it was announced that the 2017 Royal LePage Provincial Amateur Championships will be held at Bally Haly Country Club in St. John's from July 9th to 12th.


Gillam and Bursey Maintain Lead at 2016 Royal LePage Amateur Provincial Championships

Port Blandford, NL....With the rain subsiding, players had to content with the 30 to 50 km winds and cold weather during the second round of play at the 2016 Royal LePage Provincial Amateur Championships on the championship Twin Rivers Golf Course. In the Amateur Division Blair Bursey of Gander recorded the low score of the day with a 3 over par 74 to take a 4 stroke lead over Nathan Peters of Clovelly. Chuck Conley of Bally Haly Country Club remains in third place carding a 77 and closing to within 3 strokes of second place.

In the Womens Amateur Division Kathleen Jean of Harmon Seaside Links recorded an 89 for a two day total of 179 and close to within 1 stroke of first place Judy Gillam who carded a second day score of 91. Rosie Boland from Clovelly carded another 92 to place her 6 strokes from the leader.

In the Men's Mid Amateur Division Chuck Conley recorded a two day total of 155 to take the outright lead by two strokes over Mahboob Nawaz who carded a 77 and move into sole possession of second place just 1 stroke ahead of Eddie Bearns who moved up to third spot heading into the final day of competition.

In the Senior Men's Division, Don Boland of Bally Haly Country Club carded a 78 to hold a slim 2 stroke lead over Chuck Conley while George Chaulk of Harmon Seaside Links took over third place recording a two day total of 163. Boland also leads the Super Senior Division by 13 strokes over 2013 Senior Champion Thomas Jones of Gander Golf Club who carded an 85 and leads third place Roy Stoodley of Bally Haly Country Club by 2 strokes.

Judy Gillam, Kathleen Jean and Rosie Boland continue to dominate the field in the Women's Mid-Amateur, Senior and Super Senior Divisions with Kathleen Jean in second place in the Mid-Amateur and Senior Divisions, while Rosie Boland is 5 stroke behind in each division beside the Super Senior. In the Super Senior Division Linda Webber of Bally Haly Country Club holds third place with a two day total of 203.

This evening a players social was held at the Resort which included a number of presentations to the Most Honest Golfer, Kerry Shears for achieving the ace during the first round and a host of door prizes. The evening concluded with a special thank you to the volunteers, officials and staff of Terra Nova Resort & Golf Community.

Bursey and Gillam Lead 2016 Royal LePage Provincial Amateur Championships

Port Blandford, NL....Despite having to compete under sometimes harsh weather condition, a number of players provided some excitement after the first day of competition at the 2016 Royal LePage Provincial Amateur Championships on Twin Rivers Golf Course at Terra Nova Resort & Golf Community. Defending Amateur Champion, Blair Bursey of Gander leads the Men's Amateur Division with a 2 over par 73 and a 1 stroke lead over Nathan Peters of Clovelly. Chuck Conley of Bally Haly Country Club carded a 78 to place himself 5 strokes off the pace heading into day 2 of competition.

Defending Amateur Womens Champion Judy Gillam of Humber Valley Resort recorded an 87 to lead by 3 strokes over long time revel Kathleen Jean of Harmon Seaside Links in Stephenville. Rosie Boland from Clovelly carded a 92 to place her 5 strokes from the leader.

In the highly contested Men's Mid Amateur Division Chuck Conley and Danny Pilcz of Blomidon Golf Course at tied with identical scores of 7 over par 78 to lead by 1 stroke over Jason Stagg of Humber Valley Resort. Mahboob Nawaz of Glendenning Golf and Glen Vardy of the host club Twin Rivers are tied for 4th recording at 80.

In the Senior Men's Division, Don Boland of Bally Haly carded a 75 to hold a 3 stroke lead over fellow club member Chuck Conley while Glen Vardy holds down third place with a score of 80. Boland also leads the Super Senior Division by 7 strokes over 2014 Super Senior Champion Roy Stoodley, Thomas Jones of Gander Golf Club rounds out the top three recording an 84.

Judy Gillam, Kathleen Jean and Rosie Boland dominated the field in the Women's Mid-Amateur, Senior and Super Senior Divisions with Kathleen Jean in second place in the Mid-Amateur and Senior Divisions, while Rosie Boland is 5 stroke behind in each division beside the Super Senior. In the Super Senior Division Linda Webber of Bally Haly Country Club holds third place with a score of 104.

While the weather conditions may have dampened some players spirits, it was an exciting day for Kerry Shears of Gros Morne in St. Paul's as he recorded his first ace on the par 3, 216 yard, 11th Hole while competing with Doug Pippy and Andrew Marshall. The occasion was witnessed by Official Dave Moakler.

Port Blandford, NL....Terra Nova Resort & Golf Community in partnership with Golf Newfoundland Labrador has spent the last few days preparing to host the 2016 Royal LePage Provincial Amateur Championships on the renowned Twin Rivers Course from July 11th to 13th. A total of 97 golfers from all regions of the province including 83 men and 14 women have converged on the course to compete for the championship in eight categories including Men's and Women's Amateur, Mid-Amateur, Senior and Super Senior.

The 54 hole stroke play tournament will determine the provincial teams to represent the province at the Atlantic and National Championships. 2015 Mens Amateur Champion Blair Bursey of Gander Golf Club is back to defend his title, while Judy Gillam of Humber Valley Resort will try to duplicate her four championship victories from last year. 2016 will see the crowning of a new Mens Mid-Amateur and Senior division champions with Johnnie Williams will be defending his Mens Super Senior title.

Aside from Bl air Bursey, a number of players to keep an eye on include Nikashantess Penashue and Eddie Bearns of Bally Haly, Jason Stagg of Gros Morne, hometown favorite Glen Vardy, and Matthew Hackett of Grande Meadows. On the ladies side Kathleen Jean from Harmon Seaside Links and Janet Mills of Bally Haly have an eye on capturing another title.
