Team Newfoundland and Labrador had its best ever showing at the 2015 Maritime Cup held at the Osprey Ridge Golf Club in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia this past month. The team finished with a total of 16 points over the 2 day match play tournament.
This year's team was comprised of Adam Stanley, Captain, Eddie Bearns, Chuck Conley, Mike Curran, Steve Hawco, Jeff Sharpe, Ian Lilly, Brad Slaney, Blair Evans, Trevor Brocklehurst, Wayne Ford and CJ Nolan.
The Maritime Cup brings together the top Amateur golfers from each of the Atlantic provinces in a Ryder Cup style event over two days. The competition if very strong and continues to get tougher and tougher each year.
The first day consists of Better Ball matches in the morning and Alternate Shot matches in the afternoon. The second day consisted of Singles Matches. During the Alternate shot and singles matches each team from NL played two other teams at the same time.
In Better Ball Team NL scored 2 out of 6 available points with wins by the teams of Jeff Sharpe-Steve Hawco & CJ Nolan-Blair Evans. In Alternate Shot Team NL scored 5 out of a possible 12 points with wins by Jeff Sharpe-Steve Hawco, Mike Curran-Trevor Brocklehurst, Blair Evans-CJ Nolan, and 2 points from the team of Ian Lilly-Brad Slaney.
In Singles Team NL scored 9 out of a possible 24 points which was a tremendous improvement on previous performances in this format. Adam Stanley, CJ Nolan, Mike Curran, & Eddie Bearns each gained 1 point. Brad Slaney and Chuck Conley gained 1.5 points in their matches. And Ian Lilly lead the way again by gaining 2 points from his matches.
The total of 16 points was the highest that Team NL has ever gathered in this event and the team narrowly missed out on finishing ahead of Team PEI who accumulated a total of 17.5 points. It was a great weekend and another great event. Team NL continues to improve each year at this event and there are many great things to come in the years ahead.
